We focus on caregiver training and involvement, positive reinforcement, natural environment teaching, and play-based teaching.

Melissa Liotta, M.S. BCBA
I am the owner and founder of Breakthrough Behavior Services and have been working in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis for over 8 years. I am a veteran with 10 years of service in the Army and was able to use my military education benefits to accomplish my goals of becoming a BCBA. I have a B.A. in Psychology and a M.S. in Applied Behavior Analysis. My priority as a BCBA is to use a client-centered approach while using the natural environment as much as possible. I strive to identify strengths and make sure we are allowing these strengths to be used in a way that fulfills and enriches lives. I want to help children and caregivers feel supported and create an environment that empowers all parties to flourish.
What is ABA?
ABA is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. Although it is most commonly used with individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities, it can be applied to ALL human behavior. That's right, I use it on myself constantly and you probably do too! In its simplest form, the consequences that follow our behavior influence the future likelihood of us engaging in that behavior again. For example, if I complete all of my daily tasks, I reward myself with a piece of dark chocolate. Because the dark chocolate is a favorable consequence for me, I will continue to try and complete all of my tasks. Consequences can come in many forms such as praise, social attention, breaks from a task, sensory stimulation, etc.
With ABA therapy, an individualized treatment plan will be created to ensure that we are addressing any areas of concern. We focus on behaviors that are observable and measurable and aim to work on skill acquisition to address any deficits and to help prevent and replace challenging behaviors. We will continuously take data to assess progress and make adjustments to the treatment plan as needed.
